Bipolar Disorder

What is Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental condition that produces abrupt changes in a person’s disposition, vitality, and capacity for thought. Mania and depression, characterized as high and low emotions in people with bipolar disorder, are distinct from the normal ups and downs that most people experience.

Hallucinations and delusions are common psychotic symptoms in severe mania or depression bipolar episodes. These psychotic symptoms frequently reflect an individual’s elevated emotions. Psychotic signs in bipolar disorder patients might lead to the incorrect diagnosis of schizophrenia.

People who are manic are frequently ignorant of the detrimental effects of their activities. Because some persons with bipolar disorder turn suicidal even during manic episodes, suicide is a constant risk. Manage the symptoms of the illness by learning from previous bouts what behaviors are “red flags” of manic behavior.

We conduct a thorough physical examination, an interview, and request lab testing at BHPS. These tests can help rule out conditions like hyperthyroidism and other disorders that may mirror the problem.

Treatment for bipolar disorder:

Our treatment options involve several approaches:

  1. Family-focused treatment and cognitive behavioral therapy.
  2. Antipsychotic drugs, mood stabilizers, and, to a lesser extent, antidepressants are examples of pharmaceuticals.
  3. self-management techniques, such as awareness of early indicators of an episode and education.
  4. Exercise, meditation, religious observance, and prayer are examples of complementary health practices that can supplement but not replace medical care.
